Each letter answers the cursor on its own, thickening and growing as you come near. Three falloff curves decide how far that influence reaches: linear for a hard edge, exponential for contrast, Gaussian for a soft bell.

The ten controls are five pairs, a start and a maximum for each axis the typeface can move along: weight, width, optical size and grade. That is why this needs a variable font to do anything interesting, and why the result looks like the type was designed to move rather than stretched.
